    27/07/2003 Schlierstadt, Germany CRW 37 6000 ?/?   #588478
Description: The German national team has been visiting Schlierstadt for several days in order to practice formation jumps over the airport. Around 12:30 four jumpers took off in one of the airplanes on the Schlierstadt airport. Ten minutes later, at a height of approximately 2500 meters (~8000 ft) over Zimmern they exited the airplane in order to build a formation - a so called "pyramid". For this there are four team members in the air on top of each other with open parachutes gliding towards the ground. After about 20 seconds two of the parachutes became entangled, as Olaf Boesel, manager of the Schlierstadt airport explained to the "Fränkischen Nachrichten". "They spun in a circle and spiraled towards the ground". Bother tried to escape the situation. "They were calm in and in no panicked", said Boesel, who observed the incident from the airport. "They simply did thei job". A few seconds later they crached onto a tree in a small patch of woods near Zimmern. However, there are different report about the incident. According to police the lowest jumper in the formation was in contact with the jumper above him within the formation The lower jumper consequently jettisoned his parachute and landed safely under his reserve - following a press release. The jettisoned canopy became entangled with the legs of the other man, which caused him to get into trouble - particularly, since he also became entangled in his own canopy. At this point one of the other two jumpers also jettisoned his canopy in order to come to the aide of his team mate."During this rescue attempt he was killed", said the police. His colleague survived. "He was simply lucky", thinks Olaf Boesel. He airlifted with a helicopter to a special clinic.
